Haaland promoted full professor in record time
Just ten years ago, Ingar K. Haaland (34) was an NHH student. Today, he was promoted to full professor.
Some highlights
- In 2023, Halaand received eight million NOK from the Research Council of Norway as one of the year's young research talents. Haaland applied with the research project “Polarize: Media Bias and Political Polarization.”
- He has eight peer-reviewed articles published or accepted in international high-quality journals. Notably, one of the articles is published in the Quarterly Journal of Economics (QJE), which is considered one of the top five journals in economics. The other articles are published in leading journals such as the Economic Journal and the Review of Economics and Statistics.
- In 2023, he also received NHH's publication bonus for two scientific articles published during the year, which is highly uncommon.
`"His research is groundbreaking. Ingar is one of the world’s leading young researchers in behavioral economics and an incredibly important contributor to the development of the research environment at NHH,´ says Professor Bertil Tungodden, director of the Research Centre FAIR, at the Department of Economics.
Started at NHH in 2012
Ingar Kyrkjebø Haaland is a professor at the Department of Economics.
His areas of expertise include taxation and public economics, behavioral economics, and experimental economics.
`It’s fantastic. I’ve had the privilege of working with colleagues in an absolutely amazing research group at FAIR, and I’ll continue to do so. Nothing stops when you become a professor—quite the opposite. I have many new projects underway,´says Haaland.
Haaland earned his degree in business administration from NHH, completing his bachelor’s in 2012 and his master’s in 2014.
At a Very High Level
Just five years later, he completed his PhD at NHH with the dissertation "Essays on Beliefs and Political Behavior," which examines polarization in American politics and interventions that can reduce political polarization.
`I vividly remember congratulating Ingar on his PhD in 2019. That he is already a professor reflects an impressive effort at a very high level,´ says NHH’s rector, Øystein Thøgersen.
After completing his PhD in 2019, Haaland held a research position at the University of Bergen for a couple of years. In 2022, he returned to NHH in an associate professor tenure-track position at the Department of Economics.
This position, originally set to last until 2029, has now been overtaken by his promotion.
`Met Him Ten Years Ago´
Since then, Haaland has achieved an impressive string of high-quality publications, secured research funding, and was named one of the year’s young research talents (see fact box).
Haaland is described by the committee as "a rising star in his field of research. His productivity, already remarkable, appears to be increasing."
Tungodden summarizes Haaland’s career as follows:
`We have had the pleasure of working with Ingar since we met him as a student in the undergraduate course Economics and Psychology more than ten years ago, and we are incredibly impressed by all he has achieved. His research is groundbreaking in understanding the increasing polarization in society.´
