Retake of exams

Retake of exams

To retake an exam at the Norwegian School of Economics, you must have remaining exam attempts in the subject you wish to retake. Starting from the autumn semester of 2024, a new retake policy will be introduced for the non-teaching semester for mandatory bachelor courses.

  • Registration for retake exam

    Registration for retake exam

Students who need to retake exams under the previous policy should register in Studentweb as usual by the registration deadline for the current semester, which is September 1st for the autumn semester and February 1st for the spring semester. For those who will retake exams under the new policy, more information about registration will be provided. In Studentweb, students can either register by using the search field under the ‘Active courses’ tab and searching for the course code, or by clicking the ‘Retake course’ button under the results tab.

In mandatory bachelor’s courses, where the only form of assessment is an individual written school exam or a home exam lasting up to one day, the main rule is that a retake opportunity will be offered in the non-teaching semester.

Whether it is possible to retake an exam in a course during the non-teaching semester should be stated in the course description.

  • New retake policy

    New retake policy

From the autumn semester of 2024, a new retake policy will be established for the non-teaching semester for mandatory bachelor’s courses as follows:

    • Retakes in the non-teaching semester will be moved from the end of the semester to the beginning of the semester.
    • Retakes in the non-teaching semester will only be possible for students who were registered for assessment at the exam time in a teaching semester and who did not achieve a passing grade in the course (no-show, medical certificate, withdrawal during the exam/interruption, and fail).
    • Retakes to improve a passing grade can only occur in the semester the course is taught under the new policy.

This new policy will be implemented semester by semester in accordance with the standard study progression for the 2024 cohort. See the course description for each course for details.

For BØA students who started in the autumn of 2023 or earlier, the previous retake policy at the end of the non-teaching semester will be phased out as the new policy is introduced for the 2024 cohort.

  • Retake for the master programme

    Retake for the master programme

At the master’s level, assessments are only offered in the semester the course is taught.

The best grade will be recorded on the diploma or transcript, even if you receive a lower grade after retaking the exam. If you receive the same grade on your second attempt, the first result will appear on the diploma.

If you retake a course, you must check the course description for any changes in the syllabus or assessment method. You will be tested on the most recently taught syllabus, and there may be changes in content, syllabus, assessment method, and mandatory coursework. The course description also indicates in which semester the course is taught.
