    In today's globalized world, working across cultures has become increasingly important. Individuals and organizations must be able to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and languages. This ability is crucial for businesses to succeed in the global marketplace and for individuals to navigate multicultural societies. It involves developing an understanding of cultural differences and adapting one's communication and behavior to build trust and respect with people from different backgrounds. Ultimately, working effectively across cultures is a prerequisite for social sustainability goals.

  • Learning outcome

    Upon successful completion of this course, students are able to:

    Knowledge

    • demonstrate familiarity with fundamental theories from the field of intercultural business communication
    • demonstrate knowledge about various business cultures around the world
    • demonstrate knowledge about how language influences intercultural business communication

    Skills

    • critically assess the theories on intercultural business communication in light of practice
    • use acquired insights to reflect on how to work successfully across cultures
    • communicate relevant issues in oral and written forms
    • work in multicultural groups

    General competencies

    • demonstrate sensitivity towards and respect for intercultural diversity, which are essential social sustainability goals

  • Teaching

    Case studies and group discussions. The course requires the student’s active participation.

  • Compulsory Activity

    Have submitted and had at least seven individual reflection notes approved

  • Assessment

    The final assessment consists of a fifteen to twenty-minute group presentation based on theories and activities from class. The groups consist of 3-4 students depending on class size. The final grade is based on the groups' collective performance.

    An assessment will not be organised in the the non-teaching semester (spring).

    A selection of book chapters and articles (approx. 500 pages) will be made available on Canvas/Leganto.
