  • Topics

    This is a beginner course in Norwegian and an introduction to Norwegian language and culture. The course focuses on everyday language use. In addition, selected topics about the Norwegian culture and society are presented. The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) is an integrated part of the course design, activities, and assessment. Nor10 does not require any prior knowledge of Norwegian and aims for students to reach A1 by the end of the course.

    On successful completion of the course you can:

    Knowledge

    • Identify basic features of Norwegian grammar and language structures.
    • Describe key aspects of Norwegian culture and society in everyday contexts.

    Skills

    • Communicate about everyday life in simple, practiced situations.
    • Describe past events and plans for the future using simple phrases and time expressions.
    • Understand short, simple written texts on familiar topics
    • Produce short, simple written texts using basic vocabulary.

    General competence

    • Demonstrate Norwegian proficiency corresponding to CEFR level A1.

  • Teaching

    The course is focused on student-active learning. The lectures are a combination of presentations, group work and exercises, oral and written practice, as well as conversation classes. Oral exercise is a very important part of the course and active participation is a prerequisite.

  • Restricted access

    This course is reserved for students with no or little prior knowledge of the Norwegian language. 

  • Compulsory Activity

    • One individual written assignment
    • Two individual grammar tests

    The activities will be given throughout the semester and must be handed in by the appointed date (made public at the start of term). All elements will be graded as approved/not approved. All elements must be completed in the same teaching semester.

  • Assessment

    The assessment consists of two parts: a school exam and an oral exam

    1. Digital school exam, three hours (50%)

    2. Oral exam (50%), conducted as 20-minute group dialogues. The size of the groups depend on the overall number of students. Each student will be assessed individually.

  • Permitted Support Material

    No support material permitted.

  • Retake

    Retake in NOR10 will not be offered during the non-teaching semester (autumn). Only mandatory bachelor courses with an individual written school exam or a home exam lasting up to one day will have a retake assessment in the non-teaching semester.
