    TYS11 is the second independent course designed for students who wish to further develop their ability to communicate in German in professional contexts. The recommended prerequisite for this course is B1-level proficiency (CEFR), which can be acquired, for example, by completing TYS10. Students refine their communication skills in German with the goal of expressing themselves more precisely and with greater nuance.

    In addition to language training, students gain insight into relevant topics related to the economy and society in Germany.

  • Learning outcome

    Upon completion of the course, the student can:

    Knowledge

    • Describe oral and written communication forms used in professional contexts in German-speaking countries.
    • Identify the main content of complex texts, including professional discussions on business and society.
    • Explain key economic and societal topics in Germany.

    Skills

    • Express ideas clearly and with nuance in German on business- and society-related topics.
    • Justify viewpoints in German in professional discussions.
    • Evaluate advantages and disadvantages of alternative solutions.
    • Apply a wide range of standard linguistic structures and grammatical rules accurately.

    General competence

    • Use German independently and purposefully in professional and social contexts.
    • Adapt language use and communication strategies to different workplace situations.

  • Teaching

    The course is structured as interactive teaching, combining lectures, presentations, and group work. Active participation throughout the course is required.

    Discussion groups may be offered as a supplement to the lectures.

  • Recommended prerequisites

    German language proficiency at B1 level (CEFR), e.g., TYS10.

  • Required prerequisites

    None.

  • Compulsory Activity

    3 approved individual assignments (1 oral and 2 written).

  • Assessment

    Digital written school exam, 4 hours (50%). 

    Individual oral exam, 20 minutes (50%). 

    Separate grades are given for the written and oral exams. Both parts must be passed in the same semester. In case of a retake, both parts must be retaken.

    The exam must be answered in German.

    Recommended literature:

    • Reiten, H: Øvelseshefte til tysk grammatikk. Aschehoug, 2015. (Some exercises require some knowledge of Norwegian)

  • Retake

    Retake in TYS11 will not be offered during the non-teaching semester (spring). Only mandatory bachelor courses with an individual written school exam or a home exam lasting up to one day will have a retake assessment in the non-teaching semester.
