    SPA13 Economy and society in the Hispanic world is the most advanced Spanish course at NHH and it presupposes SPA10 and SPA20 (former SPA11/SPA12). The focus is on economy, society and politics in the Hispanic world, as well as written and oral professional communication.  

  • Learning outcome

    The student has/can upon completing the course:

    Knowledge

    - Solid knowledge of business culture and communication in the Spanish-speaking world

    - Solid knowledge of relevant economic, political, and societal conditions in the Spanish-speaking world

    Skills

    - Communicate effectively in writing and orally in Spanish in a business context

    - Understand information and arguments in articles and reports on economics

    - Write a reasoned text or report

    - Deliver a clear and systematically developed oral presentation and respond to audience questions

    General Competence

    - Communicate in writing and orally in Spanish in both private and professional contexts

    - Stay updated on economics, politics, and other societal issues in the Spanish-speaking world

  • Teaching

    The course is organized as interactive group instruction with a mix of lectures, group work, writing and review of assignments, as well as student presentations. The course requires active participation throughout. The use of e-learning tools is integrated into the teaching.

    A one-week excursion to Buenos Aires is organized during the semester, provided there are enough registered participants.

  • Recommended prerequisites

    Participants should have prior knowledge of Spanish at the B2 level.

  • Compulsory Activity

    3 individual written assignments and an oral presentation assessed as pass/fail.

    In the case of a retake: Previously approved mandatory activity (coursework requirement) remains valid even if the requirements for mandatory activity have changed.

  • Assessment

    Individual semester assignment (50%), Duration: 3 weeks

    Oral exam 30 min. (50%): Presentation of the semester assignment as well as an examination on topics from the syllabus.

    Separate grades are given for the semester assignment and the oral exam. Both parts must be passed in the same semester. In the case of a retake, both parts must be passed again.

    The syllabus will be posted on Leganto.

    Lecture slides and other materials will be posted on Canvas.
