    Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

    • use game theory to analyse strategic interaction between firms
    • identify the role of data driven advantages and network effects in some markets, in particular platform markets
    • interpret the concept of market power, and how different forms of market power affect strategic choices

    Skills

    Upon completion of the course, students can:

    • discuss strategic interactions between firms in a specific market
    • analyse how data-driven advantages and network effects can lead to dominance by one or a few firms in a market
    • use economic theory to understand how matchmakers in the digital economy should optimally price their services towards different user groups
    • analyse how entrants into network industries can build competitive advantages through market segmentation and technological choices
    • use real-life competition policy case studies to understand which limitations antitrust laws might put on firm behaviour.

    General competence

    Upon completion of the course, students can:

    • distinguish between relevant theoretical models for firm behavior
    • analyse markets by combining data and economic theory
    • apply the theoretical concepts learned in the course to analyse real-life competition policy case studies
