Mario Blázquez was appointed postdoc researcher at the Department of Business and Management Science, NHH in 2020. Previously, he did another two postdocs, one at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim and another at the Research Institute of Industrial Economics (IFN) in Stockholm. He completed a Master in Economics at European University Institute and a PhD. in Economics at University of Bologna under the supervision of Giacomo Calzolari and Emanuele Tarantino. During his doctorate, he studied one year at Toulouse School of Economics, he visited the University Pompeu Fabra for three months and another three months at the Institute for Research in Technology in Madrid.

His research focuses on the analysis of electricity markets in the presence of transmission constraints and the design of electricity auctions using theoretical models and experiments.

Currently, he is working analysing the impact of Renewables Certificates of Origin on the competition in electricity markets.

Working PAPERS

Work in Progress

I am working on a project to improve the design of electricity auctions. That project consists of two parts. In the first part, I work with my coauthor Nikita Koptyug (Research Institute of Industrial Economics) to develop a theoretical model to determine which equilibrium emerges in a uniform price auction as a function of the production capacities, the production costs and the minimum bid allowed by the auctioneer.

In the second part of the project, I work with my coauthors Chloé le Coq (Stockholm School of Economics) and Maria Bigoni (Bologna University) to design a lab experiment to test those theoretical results.

At NHH, I am working with Malin Arve, Mette Bjørndal, Endre Bjørndal and Gunnar S. Eskeland in a project that analyses the impact of Renewables Certificates of Origin on the competition in electricity markets.

Current teaching experience

Currently, I am teaching the course ENE425 Sustainable Energy in the Master Energy, Natural Resources and the Environment at NHH.  That course deals with the relation between renewable technology development, economic activity and sustainability.

Previous teaching experience

Previously, I also taught a course in Energy Economics in the join Master program between the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and the Technical University of Berlin. That course covers the most salient topics in energy markets nowadays as the design of electricity auctions, the impact of transmission constraints on the competition, or the regulation of natural monopolies.

As a teaching assistant at University of Bologna, I gained valuable experience teaching different courses in microeconomics and macroeconomics at the undergraduate and graduate level.
