The DIG research centre’s dedication to exploring transformative topics and fostering collaboration between academia and industry, makes it one of the most meaningful research centres.
Jonas Hammerschmidt
Jonas Hammerschmidt joined the DIG Research Centre in September as an Assistant Professor in Strategy and Management at NHH. Originally from Germany, Jonas brings a combination of academic expertise and professional experience to his new role.
Having earned his PhD at LUT University in Finland and worked in the sports industry, Jonas has developed a strong foundation in both theory and practice.
Jonas’ connection to DIG was established early in his tenure, thanks to Professor Inger Stensaker, who introduced him to the centre’s research environment. He was immediately drawn to DIG’s focus on blending high-quality academic research with real-world impact.

“Being part of this forward-thinking research centre provides an incredible opportunity to drive impactful advancements and shape the future of digital transformation in Norwegian society, and beyond,” he adds.
Jonas’ research centers on the strategic implications of “twin transformation”, the intersection of digital and sustainability transformations (DT and ST). He is particularly intrigued by the synergies between these two areas, where digital technologies can advance sustainability goals and sustainability, in turn, can guide innovation in the digital domain.
However, Jonas emphasizes that organizations face significant challenges in integrating these transformations cohesively.
“The challenge lies in aligning digital and sustainability objectives without one overshadowing the other, while ensuring that the twin transformation process is effectively managed to yield long-term performance improvements,” he explains.
In addition to his current research, Jonas has previously studied organizational performance through innovative and entrepreneurial strategies, with a special focus on the sports industry.
At DIG, he sees a promising future for projects that address how deep tech is reshaping our lives and society.
“With deep tech transforming our daily lives in countless ways, I’m eager to see how DIG projects tackle these developments in Norway.”
For Hammerschmidt, teamwork is key to achieving impactful results. As he settles into his role at NHH and DIG, he looks forward to being part of a community that bridges the gap between academic insight and practical application.
We welcome Jonas to the DIG Research Centre and look forward to following his journey as part of our research community!
