Essays on Energy Markets and the Environment
On Monday 11 December 2023 Kyriaki Tselika will hold a trial lecture on a prescribed topic and defend her thesis for the PhD degree at NHH.
The world's increasing energy needs have led to environmental challenges such as climate change. As the energy sector significantly impacts the environment, it plays a pivotal role in transitioning to a greener future. This thesis focuses on understanding the interactions between the energy sector and the environment, aiming to optimize energy production, consumption, and implement efficient policies for environmental sustainability.
While the electricity sector, a critical component of the global energy system, can produce negative environmental effects through generation and transmission processes, the integration of renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power, offers a promising solution to mitigate environmental impact.
The first paper in this thesis delves into the influence of renewable energy on hourly electricity prices. Employing an innovative approach that combines a panel framework and quantile regression analysis on electricity market data, the research reveals how specific hourly-related characteristics can impact the magnitude of price reductions brought about by renewable energy integration.
In the second paper, the focus shifts to the economic sustainability of renewable energy in the German wholesale electricity market. The study investigates the cannibalization and cross-cannibalization effects of wind and solar power, illustrating that the increase in wind and solar power in the electricity generation mix may lead to decreased revenues and market value for renewable sources, thereby affecting profits and posing investment risks.
The third paper explores the dynamic relationship between green bonds, clean energy stocks, and carbon prices within the financial market. Employing a unique framework, the research analyzes short-term and long-term connectedness between these green assets, identifying valuable diversification opportunities within a fully green financial system.
With each paper drawing on real-world data and employing rigorous empirical methods, this thesis offers valuable insights for stakeholders seeking to navigate the complexities of energy markets while achieving a more sustainable future.
