Kåre P. Hagen has been a professor in economics at NHH since 1978 when he received his Ph.D. degree in Economics. In the period 2000-2007 he held a position as professor in telecommunication and network economics at NHH. Thereafter, he resumed his chair in economics from which he resigned in 2011. After then he is professor emeritus at NHH and a part time researcher at the research foundation SNF. 

His main research interests are in the fields of public economics and industrial economics and he has published a number of articles in these areas. He has had several research stays at universities abroad, among which Yale University and Oxford University.  

During his academic career he has served on a number of committees appointed by the Norwegian government, among which several on tax policy. In 2011 - 2012 he served as a chairperson of an expert committee appointed by the government on revising Norwegian guidelines for cost-benefit analysis.
