Hiring Pre-Doctoral FellowS

The Department of Economics, NHH, invites applications for two pre-doctoral fellow positions for the 2025/2026 academic year. These positions provide an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to contribute to cutting-edge economic research and develop their skills in a dynamic academic environment.

The Department of Economics at NHH explores the key factors influencing economic choices and their effects on society. Our research tackles major global challenges such as climate change, economic instability, growth, development, and inequality. 

The Department is built around a number of internationally renowned research groups in a wide range of fields, providing high quality research and teaching in economics.


Research Areas and Supervisors

These full-time, one-year positions combine research work with learning activities, providing opportunities for growth and skill development. The positions are ideal for recent master's graduates interested in pursuing a PhD in Economics. As a pre-doctoral fellow, you will work closely with faculty supervisors and a team of international researchers. 

The role provides an opportunity to gain research experiencestrengthen analytical skills, and prepare for a PhD. Candidates planning to apply for graduate programs will also benefit from faculty mentorship and potential letters of recommendation.

We are offering positions in the following fields:

 

Macroeconomics

Supervisor: Associate Professor Jonna Olsson

The selected candidate will work on the project “Inequality in Work, Wealth, and Welfare” (I3W), which aims to generate empirical insights and develop theoretical models to explain the joint distribution of work, wealth, life expectancy, income, and other economic indicators. This project employs macroeconomic theory, structural quantitative models, and microdata to analyze economic inequality.

MIcroeconomics 

Supervisor: Associate Professor Morten Sæthre

The selected candidate will contribute to the ERC-funded project “Distributional Effects of Environmental Policies” (DEEP). This research examines the economic and distributional impacts of environmental policies, with a particular focus on transportation and energy markets. The project involves empirical industrial organization methods and quantitative policy evaluation.

Responsibilities

Pre-doctoral fellows will assist in various research-related tasks, including:

  • Data collection, processing, and cleaning
  • Empirical analysis using Stata, R, or Python
  • Literature reviews and synthesis of academic work
  • Visualization and presentation of research findings
  • Assistance in drafting research papers and reports

The positions are a full-time commitment and combines research work with learning activities. The appointments are for one year.

Qualifications

Candidates must have:

  • A Master’s degree (at the time of starting) with excellent grades in Economics, Statistics, Data Science, or another quantitative field.
  • Strong quantitative and programming skills (e.g., Stata, R, Python, or MATLAB).
  • Independent problem-solving skills and the ability to translate high-level guidance into meaningful research.
  • Proficiency in English.

We are looking for candidates who are motivated, proactive, and eager to contribute to research. The ideal candidates should enjoy working independently, while also collaborating within a research team.
