EEU10 Sustainable Cities

    This course explores key challenges shaping sustainable urban development. Students will investigate innovative, real-world solutions to pressing urban challenges such as sustainable tourism and CO₂-neutral city planning. The course is a collaboration between four institutions: Université Toulouse Capitole, NHH Norwegian School of Economics, HU Hitotsubashi University, and WU Vienna and is delivered fully online. The participating institutions will provide online modules, which will highlight a range of sustainability issues faced by cities around the world. Throughout the course, students will be guided by lecturers from the participating institutions and will present their findings at the end of the course.

  • Learning outcome

    After completion of the course, the students will be able to:

    Knowledge

    • Differentiate key sustainable challenges faced by cities worldwide and recognize how economic, legal, social, and environmental dimensions interact in shaping urban development.
    • Analyze and compare different policy approaches and practical strategies that cities employ to address issues such as sustainable tourism, CO2, neutral city planning, smart mobility, and climate adaption.

    Skills

    • Engage with academic and practice-oriented discourse on sustainable urban transformation
    • Critically assess real world solutions and innovation initiatives.
    • Evaluate appropriate strategies for data collection and data analysis in sustainability

    General competencies

    • Evaluate research and practice in sustainable cities.
    • Effectively communicate and present complex theoretical and empirical insights clearly and concisely culminating in a virtual exhibition.
    • Apply scholarly insights to inform and shape strategic decision-making in sustainable cities.

  • Teaching

    The course is delivered fully online.

    The course includes video-based online modules and a group assignment. The modules contain asynchronous video materials, mandatory readings, and quizzes. Furthermore, students work in cross-university teams on a group project and present the key outcomes in the form of a poster. The teams are supervised by a lecturer from one of the partner universities.

    There will be four modules covering an introduction to sustainable city strategies. Topics include transportation, energy (smart grids), (over)tourism, technology, aging populations, and urban greenery/plantations.

    The modules are hosted on WU’s internal platform for the ENGAGE.EU Signature Course.

  • Restricted access

    EEU10 is an ENGAGE.EU signature course offered to students from the ENGAGE.EU alliance.

    The course is limited to a total of 80 students and will admit up to 20 students from each of the following institutions: the Norwegian School of Economics, Université Toulouse Capitole, Hitotsubashi University, and WU Vienna.

    Students register for the course through their home universities. NHH students must register for the course in Studentweb.

  • Compulsory Activity

    Attendance at the four scheduled course dates are mandatory:

    • Kick-off: October 9, 2026 (Fri), 11:00-13:00
    • Group Work Session 1: October 21, 2026 (Wed), 11:00-12:30
    • Group Work Session 2: November 4, 2026 (Wed), 11:00-12:30
    • Closing Session: November 27, 2026 (Fri), 11:00-13:00

    In addition, students are required to complete four multiple-choice quizzes.

    The course approval is only valid in the semester in which it was obtained.

  • Assessment

    Individual assignment on home city (50%). Students are given approximately 6 weeks to complete the assignment.

    Group poster and presentation on comparative analysis (50%). This component is completed in groups of 3-5 students.

    A-F

  • Literature

    The course literature will be made available through Leganto.

  • Retake

    Retake in EEU10 will not be offered during the non-teaching semester (spring). Only mandatory bachelor courses with an individual written school exam or a home exam lasting up to one day will have a retake assessment in the non-teaching semester.
