Project Details

The purpose of this research project is to study how employees’ access to alcohol affects real outcomes such as firm productivity and performance.

Alcohol is the most harmful drug in Europe due to its leading role in death, mental health problems, violence, and economic hardship according to the European Health Policy Alliance.

In addition, there is evidence that alcohol consumption can negatively affect individual decision-making and productivity. Therefore, at the aggregate level, employees’ alcohol consumption can create negative spillover effects for their employers.

Although researchers have examined individual effects of alcohol consumption, evidence on aggregate effects is scarce due to data limitations or the absence of exogenous shocks to alcohol consumption. This study aims to fill this gap.

We use data on (1) bars’ closing hours and violations from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, and individuals and firms from (2) Statistics Norway and (3) Norwegian Corporate Accounts.

More information about the project is available in the public information letter (PDF).
